Does this show Latest, New, Unread topics or topics and comments>
Is there a way for me to show the topics and comments that are new / unreadfor me

The best way I have found is to just use the suggested topics at the bottom of any topic page. The darker ones have not yet been read by you.
There have been quite a few updates to the forum software after this question was posted. To answer the original question, if you hover over them, it will explain what each does. There seemed to be issues with how these items showed before, but has been fixed by updates and seems to be working correctly now.
