Thanks for replying
First a little background
I'm not really into 3d printing - my 12 yr old grandson is - but he has kind of hooked me in
he has been doing it since I guess the age of 7 - he knows a lot about g code, marlin, cura, s3d, ect.
I bought him an FT-5 in June last year - we built it together - it took 6 months to get assembled and working properly
we had all the problems along the way as most do - z axis binding - wrong setting on stepper drivers ect.
So we have printing for about 6 months - some good some not so good - simplfy3D was the best upgrade so far
He is moving in a week far away to Florida (we live in Michigan), so I bought another ft-5 kit which I just received
What I want to do is totally mod the ft-5 from the ground up - all aluminum parts (no melamine at all) - 24v meanwell PS - Duet or smoothie board - better hot end and extruder - one Z axis motor - an advanced overheat shut down system like what's being discussed in other threads - and more as people here come up with more good ideas
As I mod my new ft-5, whether I make the part or buy it and test it, I'll buy or make another one and send it off to Florida for him to install on his machine.
Therefore I want to replace the no-name stepper motors with something of a higher quality from a good manufacturer
price is not a consideration (within reason) - I don't really know what fast is from you're prospective - he has been printing at 60 mm/s.
I would like to have the highest quality prints that I can - so if that means slowing down and using .9 steppers that's ok
I've looked at the web site that you source you're steppers from - there are a lot to choose from - I don't know this well enough to make an intelligent selection. other than one with exactly the same specs provided by folger
You had mentioned that one nema 23 would be good for the Z axis - that makes sense to me - to go bigger with one motor
So if you can sometime when you have a chance I would like your recommendation for replacements for the X, both Y's, extruder and the 23 size for the Z
sorry this was so long
